Talented Toros Recognized with WOBA Awards

WOBA's Board of Directors announced the recipients of their annual awards on Monday, November 5th . 

Many nominations were submitted recognizing the achievements of our baseball community's outstanding accomplishments.

Two Toros were honored for their devotion, hard work and successes.

Congratulations to:

Owen Shore (Goderich - Western Ontario Toros) -- 2018 Youth Player of the Year

Aidan Nicholson (Owen Sound - Western Ontario Toros) -- 2018 Youth Pitcher of the Year 

It is notable that Aidan was previously awarded WOBA's 2015 Youth Player of the Year and Nathan Arnold, another Toro, was WOBA's 2016 Youth Player of the Year.

Owen 2018 achievements included - in 43 games against A, AA and AAA competition he led the Toros in:
*batting  average - .470
*on base percentage -  .503
*slugging percentage - .724
*RBI’s – 42
*Singles 39 
*Doubles 15 
*Triples 8
*runs scored – 57
*stolen bases – 41 (with a steal success percentage of better than 91%)

In 143 plate appearances Owen only struck out 13 times.  

Owen was also a key part of the Toros pitching rotation with: the second lowest ERA on the team (for pitchers with more than 10 innings of work) 29K’s in less than 22 innings of work Owen was the team captain for the Toros.  As Junior Pitcher of the Year Aidan Nicholson was a dominant pitcher at the 13U level. 

Aidan’s achievements as a pitcher competing against A, AA, and AAA competition over the course of 45 game season included a team best:
*ERA of 4.2 (for pitchers with more than 10 innings of work)
*number of strikeouts with 91 an astounding rate of strikeouts to base on balls of 2.4 (2.4K’s/BB) - 

Aidan had an efficiency rating of 17.5 pitches per inning worked and had 21 innings of 13 or fewer pitches overall strike percentage of 62.5% and first pitch strike rate of an outstanding 64.5% generated ground balls at a team leading rate of 79%.

Aidan was also outstanding at controlling the running game – with 17 runners caught stealing against only 44 SB’s allowed (for an SB% of .72%)  

Aidan is right there with the best pitchers at his age in Ontario.
